Mid Glos Engine Preservation Society

Our History:

Gloucester was once a hive of Stationary Engine construction, with R A Lister & Co based at Dursley, Fielding & Platt in Gloucester, the trusty engine company in Cheltenham and several other forms in the Stroud valleys.
Many historic machines have already fallen victim to the 'scrap man’s hammer', but others have been saved by dedicated enthusiasts to give pleasure and insight into the past for future generations.

Prime amongst these in the society’s area is the 1921 Fielding and Platt at our Chairman’s farm. This machine was built in Gloucester, spent its working life at Lye near Stourbridge where it drove a whole horse shoe factory. It was then rescued, removed and after many adventures it was restored and installed in its present location entirely by volunteer effort from the society.
'New' engines still surface from time to time. Often in the most unlikely of places all needing a good home with some TLC. Very few of them however are as complicated as or demand the engineering skills and money that were necessary to complete the Fielding project.
Indeed, some engines still come up for the price of a few pints of beer and some can even be picked up with one hand!

There’s limits as to how many engines an enthusiast can keep, however interestingly enough new enthusiasts keep surfacing too!

You don’t need to be a master-mechanic or a brilliant engineer and age/gender is definitely not a barrier to this hobby.

The sole requirement is an interest in old machinery, in particular, oil and gas engines and their associated machinery.
